Alice in Wonderland, a Walt Disney Production, first came out in 1951. I cannot recall the first time I watched it, but I know I was very young. I used to watch it every night before I went to bed because I loved it so much. There was something about the movie that was so intriguing to me, like it was a way to escape the normalness of my life that revolved around going to school and then coming home and doing homework. I wished so much that I could be just like Alice and discover my own kind of wonderland.
Like most young children, I had a very big imagination. I was a dreamer and imagined crazy places like the wonderland in the movie. The movie just helped to fuel my imagination in ways that I could not have done on my own. I think everyone has moments in their lives where they just want to escape and go somewhere magical, and this movie was the only way that I could do that.
In the beginning of the movie, Alice is sitting in a tree with her cat while her older sister read to her from some English book that she was not at all interested in. I could relate to that because at the time, it seemed like studying was all I ever got to do. Alice began talking to her cat about her own wonderland and not long after she spotted a rabbit dressed in clothes, running and yelling about being late. Of course she decided to follow and ended up falling down a deep dark hole. This scene is what began the journey through wonderland.
When Alice finally landed in the hole, she saw the rabbit go through a very small door that she could not fit through. She found a potion that made her smaller, but then could not reach the key to unlock the door. At this point in the movie, I could feel Alice’s frustration. When Alice finally gets through the door, the movie really begins.
Everything was so surreal. My favorite part was that the animals could speak. As a child, I always wished that my pets could talk to me. At times, my life would have been so much more interesting if I could just have conversations with them. For the first few years of my life, I was an only child. During that time, I just had to entertain myself, and my pets were the only things that I had to keep me company. The fact that they could not talk did not stop me from talking to them, but it sure would have been interesting if they had talked back.
During Alice’s time in wonderland, she encountered some strange characters. One part of the movie that always freaked me out was the Cheshire cat. From his creepy smile to the way he disappeared was so strange to me and always made me a little uneasy. He did not look like any cat I had ever seen, and I did not like him at all. The darkness in the scenes he was in only added to his creepiness. Although he was one of my least favorite characters, I will never forget his huge, toothy smile and his voice. Overall, the Cheshire cat was a very memorable character.
Throughout the movie, Alice encounters some very different characters. The flowers in the garden start out being very nice to her but then turned on her and called her a “weed.” That part always made me so mad at the flowers when I was little, but now I think it is a funny scene. The part that has always been confusing to me was the caterpillar. To this day, I do not understand what was going on throughout that whole scene, but the movie would not be the same without it. The best part of the whole movie was probably the Mad Hatter and the tea party. I wish we could all have an “un-birthday” everyday and have cake and gifts. That would be so much fun.
Towards the end of the movie, when Alice was desperately trying to find her way home, I could feel her sadness. I cannot stand to be away from home for long periods of time because I get so homesick. While it would be so cool to be able to go to a place like wonderland, I would not be able to stand being away from my home for long at all. I wanted her to find her way home so badly because wonderland did not seem all that great that I would want to stay there.
The last scene with the queen and all of the card soldiers always freaked me out. I always got so mad at the queen because she was so mean to Alice and everyone else for that matter. I was so glad when Alice finally woke up when the queen was chasing her. At the end of the movie, I was reminded that places like wonderland can only exist in our dreams, where they belong. While we might long to escape to magical places, there really is no better place than at home with our families where we are safe.
I still wish sometimes that I could escape and that my dog could talk back when I talk to her, but honestly, it would scare me to death if she did. That would be a sight. This movie made me realize that there’s really no better place to be than home and our dreams need to stay dreams because sometimes they can be amazing, but they can also be scary. - Candace Crane
